New Year, New Artists

A pair of local creatives take over Amazon's Understory.

Understory Artists in Residence Stevie Shao and Perry Porter are bringing their creative energy to the base of the Amazon Spheres through March 22. The two artists will showcase their individual work, collaborate on projects, and engage with the public in a variety of ways.

Stevie Shao, a Seattle-born illustrator and designer, brings her vibrant love of color, nature, and community to the Understory Artist in Residence program. With deep ties to the city and a versatile creative background, Stevie’s work has appeared in both public and private spaces, blending bold visual storytelling with a spirit of collaboration. At Understory, she invites visitors to experience her process, drawing inspiration from shared experiences to create dynamic painted works that reflect the energy of the Pacific Northwest.

Perry Porter, a painter, musician, and multidisciplinary artist, infuses his residency with a dynamic blend of expressive portraiture, bold colors, and lyrical influences. His work captures movement, emotion, and the intersection of visual and musical storytelling. At Understory, visitors can witness his creative process firsthand as he crafts new works inspired by rhythm, community, and Seattle’s vibrant arts culture.

Visitors can watch the artists at work—Stevie is in the Understory on Tuesdays from noon to 6 p.m., and Perry is there on Thursdays from noon to 6 p.m.—and even help inspire their craft through interactive activities. A prompt at the northern end of the space invites guests to share something that represents an important phase in their lives. Nearby, a wall displays dozens of colorful Post-its responding to a “Let’s Make a Song” prompt, where visitors contribute favorite song titles, lyrics, or original words. Perry plans to incorporate these ideas into new rap songs and will release a free downloadable playlist at the end of his residency.

Stop by to check out these amazing local artists next time you’re in the area. The Understory is free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
