“Almost Live!” Returns

Explore Seattle’s Comedy Legacy at MOHAI

What do a superhero in running shoes, a quirky science guy, and the heart of Seattle’s comedy scene have in common? They’re all part of the legendary show “Almost Live!,” which aired on KING 5 from 1984 to 1999. Known for its sharp wit and local flavor, “Almost Live!” became a cornerstone of Seattle’s cultural landscape.

On August 31, MOHAI dives deep into the show’s history, featuring a fascinating collection of props, costumes, and stories from the cast—highlighted by a special donation from Bill Nye. “Almost Live! (Almost an Exhibit)” will run through February 23, 2025, and will offer a nostalgic and engaging journey through the humor, creativity, and cultural impact of the iconic Seattle-based sketch comedy show.

This exhibit is more than just a walk down memory lane—it’s a celebration of a show that left an indelible mark on Seattle’s cultural landscape. Visitors will find a curated selection of artifacts, including unique items donated by beloved science educator and television personality Bill Nye, alongside treasures from other legendary “Almost Live!” cast members such as John Keister, Tracey Conway, Steve Wilson, and Ross Shafer.

Nye, who first joined the cast of “Almost Live!” in 1986, brought his signature blend of comedy and science to the show, creating unforgettable sketches that would later evolve into his role as “The Science Guy.” His donation to MOHAI includes props and apparatuses from these early days, such as the device used to demonstrate the power of atmospheric pressure—memorably involving show host John Keister—and the superhero costume from his popular “Speed Walker” character. These artifacts provide a glimpse into the creative process behind the show and highlight the innovative spirit that defined it. Visitors will enjoy a vibrant mix of personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes stories, and other rare artifacts that paint a full picture of the show’s legacy and its profound influence on Seattle’s identity.
